A Tribute to Coal Miners Stamp

Here is an article written on June 30, 2010 by a staff reporter for the Citizen’s Voice,
a newspaper in NE Pennsylvania.

Pursuit of coal miner stamp gains momentum.

State legislators on Tuesday pushed forward their quest to honor coal miners with a postage stamp, with the state House approving a resolution that asks the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to suggest a stamp detailing the American coal miner.

Along with the committee, the Coal Miners Stamp Committee of Northeastern Pennsylvania will help conduct a nationwide education campaign about the initiative that will also include letters sent to governors and legislative leaders in 26 states that have coal.

“ Our homes are warm, out cities are lit, and the industrial revolution I America happened because of the difficult and dangerous work coal miners perform every day under the harshest of conditions,” said state Rep. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke.  “ It is time to honor the people who help power our nation.”

Comment:  I think it is time that the nation recognize these heroes who spend their lives in the bowels of the earth. I am a coal miner’s daughter and have included a short glimpse of my early life as such, in an article I wrote for my grandchildren.  You may view it here:  http://www.asmallcoalminingtown.com/Mine.htm
